Requirements for Operating Vehicles on Fort Lee
Fort Lee Vehicle Registration
Fort Lee requires residents and employees to register all motor vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds they operate on Fort Lee with the Vehicle Registration Office which is located in Building 5228 on Lee Avenue. There hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for DoD decals and extended passes. Visitors are required to enter the Lee Gate Inspection pit for admittance.
Motorcycle Registration Requirements
Motorcycle operators must show proof of completion of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Experienced Rider Course to register their motorcycles. The Motorcycle Safety Class is offered free of charge on Fort Lee by volunteers who work with the Installation Safety Office. For the next class call (804)-765-3129.
Traffic Restrictions
Fort Lee has an official physical training route Monday through Friday from 5 to 7:30 a.m. During this time, all traffic is prohibited on Shop Road from the Main Post Exchange to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum and on the entire length of B Avenue. Prohibited routes are marked with cones and signs during the physical training times. Violators with be cited by the Fort Lee Police.
Speed Limits: 15 and 25 mph
The speed limit in Fort Lee housing area is 15 mph. All other roads are 25 unless otherwise posted. Speed limits are enforced using radar, especially in the housing areas. Individuals cited for a moving violation will receive a U.S. Violation Notice, requiring either the payment of the fine or appearance in Magistrate Court.
In addition, Fort Lee Police also have the additional option to issuing a Form 1408. If a driver receives a sufficient number of 1408’s or Violation Notices in a given period of time their on-post driving privileges will be suspended.
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
The nearest Virginia department of Motor Vehicle Office is located about one mile from the Sisisky Gate at 4401 Crossing Boulevard in Hopewell. From the Sisisky Gate make a right-hand turn onto Route 36, and then make another right-hand turn at the Crossings Boulevard. The DMV is a half mile up on the left hand side.
