Driving Directions and Gate Info
Fort Lee is about 30 miles from Richmond, 135 miles from Washington DC and 95 miles from Virginia Beach.
I-95 Southbound from Arlington, VA
(Approximate driving time: 2 hours 17 minutes)
Go south on I-95, merging onto I-295-S via exit number 84A (on the left) toward Rocky Mount, NC. Proceed on I-295 South onto VA-36 West Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B toward Fort Lee/Colonial Heights. At the I-295 Fort Lee/Colonial Heights exit go to the fifth traffic light, then turn left at the Lee Avenue Gate. Get immediately in the right hand lane and park in the Welcome Center parking lot.
I-95 Northbound from Rocky Mount, NC

Drive north on I-95 merging onto I-295 North via exit number 46 toward Washington. Proceed on I-295 North onto VA-36 West Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B toward Fort Lee/Colonial Heights. At the I-295 Fort Lee/Colonial Heights exit, go to the fifth traffic light and turn left at the Lee Avenue Gate. Get immediately in the right hand lane and park in the Welcome Center parking lot.
I-64 Eastbound from Charlottesville, VA

Proceed East on I-64 merging onto I-295 South via exit number 177 toward Washington/Norfolk. Proceed on I-295 South onto VA-36 West Oaklawn Boulevard. Once you have reached the I-295 Fort Lee/Colonial Heights exit go to the fifth traffic light and turn left at the Lee Avenue Gate. Get immediately in the right hand lane and park in the Welcome Center parking lot.
I-64 Westbound from Virginia Beach, VA

Drive west on I-64, merging onto I-295 South via exit number 200 toward Rocky Mount, NC. Merge onto I-295 South via the exit on the left toward Bottoms Bridge. Proceed on I-295 South onto VA-36 West Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B towards Fort Lee/Colonial Heights. At the I-295 Fort Lee/Colonial Heights exit go to the fifth traffic light and turn left at the Lee Avenue Gate. Get immediately in the right hand lane and park in the Welcome Center parking lot.
Fort Lee Gates
Enter Fort Lee from either of the two gates located on Highway 36. Drivers are advised to call the Fort Lee Police Station at (804)-734-7400 shortly before arriving as the 24-hour gate may occasionally shift from the Lee Gate to the Sisisky Gate. If you are driving a large panel van, truck, RV or pulling a paneled trailer, refer to the special instructions.
To obtain a temporary post vehicle pass you must provide a valid registration for your vehicle, proof of insurance, and a valid driver’s license. Drivers entering without a Department of Defense sticker are restricted to the Sisisky Gate. (See special instructions.)
Special Instructions
Between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. the Sisisky Gate on Hwy 36 is the only access for oversized vehicles and vehicles without a DoD sticker. After turning left onto Sisisky Boulevard from Hwy 36 immediately pull into the right hand lane to receive further instructions. If you arrive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. proceed about one mile past the Sisisky Gate to the stop light at the Lee Avenue Gate. At the stoplight make a left turn and stay in the left hand lane. There is no room in the Welcome Center Parking lot for large vehicles to turn around. You must stop at the gate to receive further instruction.
Note: Advanced Individual Students attending their first military occupational skill course are not authorized privately owned vehicles.
Commercial Transportation Available at Fort Lee
Airport Shuttle and Taxi Service
Groome transportation is authorized to provide shuttle service to and from the Richmond International Airport, which is about 40 minutes North of Fort Lee. Call (804)-748-0779 for service.

There are only four local taxi companies authorized to operate on Fort Lee, providing transportation in and around the post. Taxis from outside the local area may deliver customers to Fort Lee, but may not make pickups.
