Petersburg's Historic Churches
Petersburg real estate buyers who are interested in historic architecture or who are looking for a new spiritual home will enjoy seeing the collection of area churches that date back to the city's earliest days. Among notable early area churches are Blandford Church, built in 1735, whose congregation later consecrated a new church building in downtown Petersburg, Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. Merchant's Hope Church in Hopewell was completed in 1657 and is the oldest Episcopal church still in use in America. It was named after a plantation and an English merchant ship.
Gillifield Baptist Church, founded in 1786, is Petersburg's second oldest African American congregation and one of the oldest in the U.S.
Oak Street A.M.E. Zion began in 1818 as a mission church of the Methodist Episcopal Church, then its black members split off to form their own church in 1879. Local blacks provided free labor to build the current church in 1879.
